FreeFest Total 2009, one the biggest underground jamborees of the
Hungarian punk and hardcore scene, will be organised for the third
time this year. We started FreeFest to show that the scene can get
together to make our own festival ourselves, while spending a nice
weekend together. Besides the musical programme, we feel it's
important to introduce the audience to some organizations (animal
rigths, environmentalism, drugs prevention, community radio, etc.).
We're not interested in participating in the commercialism of the
music industry, human values and friendship is are more important
to us than money. The bands and the organisers all volunteered to
make this show happen, and to make it run smoothly. This is a large
gathering of friends, a large house party! The inspiration!
There lived a few enthusiastic guys near Soskut and Tarnok in the
mid-90s led by Gergo Imre (Infuzio, KA Antisocial Project), who
organised a weekend gathering every year for a few bands of friends,
where they played their music to each other. By the 6th year the
tightly knit party grew into a small festival pulling about 300
people where we were regular participants. Unfortunately the
organisers could not come to an agreement with the authorities,
so it had to stop. Parallel to this, and later, there were some
other underground initiatives (New Wave Festival, Independent Fest,
Voros Yuk Camp, etc.), which withered away mostly because of financial
reasons. Meanwhile punk and hardcore bands, and even more importantly,
the supporting audience got slowly pushed out of the big Hungarian
festivals. By 2005 both the audience and the bands found themselves
without a summer festival. As always, it was natural to take things
into our own hands the DIY way, if we didn't like it.
The first jamboree was held in Szazhalombatta, in the Boathouse
camping. It didn't need much organisation, more like coordination,
as almost everybody joined in the effort immediately, and became an
active participant. There were and are no leaders, only tasks to be
done. Everybody helped where they could do the most. Keksz made the
website. The bands from abroad (11 bands from Austria, Belgium,
France, Germany, Slovakia, Slovenia and Voivodina) as well as the
Hungarian bands (Boiler, Silver Shine, Hold X True, Liberal Youth,
Semmi Komoly, Barackca, tHE sNOBS, just to name a few) kindly accepted
the invitation and came bearing the costs themselves. Just like the
invited organizations (eg. FAUNA Society, The Clean Air Action Group).
The concerts were broadcast live by Fiksz Radio. The great size of the
audience and the level of unity proved that there's a need for events
like this. These three days united the audience, the musicians and the
coordinators even more, and on the way back home, we all felt FreeFest
was our own.
So this supporting environment made it natural to have the festival
again in 2006. The venue changed because of the clashes between the
owner of the camping and the town council. The new place was the Csepel
district of Budapest, where Csepel-Schwinn took us in in their Skate
Park. An extreme weekend in the extreme place! The concept and the
running of the show remained the same, but the number of volunteers
increased. Misi Juhasz (of Mas club and EGAL club in Eger, organiser
of the Total festivals in the 80s), and Tamas Rupaszov (of Trottel
Records, organiser of later Total festivals) liked our 2005 efforts
and saw it as the reincarnation of the earlier series, so FreeFest
got the Total subtitle. In this light, every day a legendary band
from the 80s played (CPg, Tizedes meg a Tobbiek, and Lenin krt., who
reunited only for the one time at FreeFest). Besides the big names
from the past, Poland was added to the list of foreign bands.
This summer we're inviting our friends to the countryside again.
FreeFest Total 2007 will be held at the Musical Farmhouse in
Lajosmizse. The goals, the ideas, the dreams are still the same!
